PE V Professional IEC

What it is:

The PE V Professional IEC has 33 wideband filters arranged in multiple filter banks to cover a wide frequency range (dc – 3 GHz) for harmonic filtering.  The PE V Professional IEC can reduce noise up to 1000 feet.  The PE V Professional IEC can be installed in between any high-end detachable power cord and the component power 10/15 amp IEC inlet.  The PE V Professional IEC can be used in unbalanced and balanced applications.  Each unit is hand-built and signed by Alan Maher.

What it does for your system:

The PE V Professional IEC addresses power factor correction by bringing the power factor of an AC power circuit closer to 1 by supplying reactive power of opposite sign.  The PE V Professional IEC effectively cancels the inductive and capacitive effects of the load.  At the same time, the PE V Professional IEC filter eliminates/reduces RFI/EMI and crosstalk distortion, and provides component isolation to improve signal to noise ratio and electrical circuit impendence.  The PE V Professional IEC acts as a surrogate power supply for the component.

The PE V Professional IEC increase bass definition, articulation, and low-level resolution.  Midrange is improved in the areas of inner detail, texture, and non-colored midrange presentation.    Highs are extended, detailed, and non-fatigued/bright.  Soundstage size increases in height, width, and depth.  Video benefits include increased black level and contrast, color saturation, hue, detail/resolution, and sharpness.  The PE V Professional IEC is designed for the audiophile/videophile that craves a true-to-life sound/video reproduction.

Why it works – the science:

Linear loads are voltage fluctuations and harmonic noise that occur when any large appliance (i.e. amplifier, refrigerator, the factory down the street, etc.) are switched on or off.  In a worst case scenario, reactive elements (inductance, capacitance, resistance) can interact with the system (any power supply plugged into the wall) and with each other (via the in-wall electrical wiring) to create resonant conditions (or odd harmonics) above 50/60 Hz, resulting in electrical instability and severe over-voltage/under-voltage fluctuations.

A non-linear load on a power system is typically a rectifier (such as used in a power supply), or some kind of arc discharge device (fluorescent lamp, washing machine, furnace, etc.).  Because current in these appliances is interrupted by a switching action, the current contains frequency components (noise) that are multiples of the 50/60 Hz frequency.  Non-linear loads change the shape of the current waveform from a sine wave to some other form.  Non-linear loads create harmonic currents in addition to the original (fundamental frequency) AC current.

Typical linear components such as capacitors and inductors cannot cancel these harmonic currents, so other methods such as filters or active power factor correction are required to smooth out their current demand over each cycle of alternating current and so reduce the generated harmonic currents.

Active power factor correction controls the amount of power drawn by a load in order to obtain a power factor as close as possible to unity.  In most applications, Active PFC controls the input current of the load so that the current waveform is proportional to the mains voltage waveform (a sine wave).  Because Active PFC uses a circuit to correct power factor, it is able to generate a theoretical power factor of over 95%, markedly diminishing total harmonics, automatically correcting for AC input voltage, and capable of a full range of input voltage.

The PE V Professional IEC is a meticulously designed series of filter banks that addresses problems in both linear and non-linear load applications, active power factor correction, component isolation, and the removal of electrical circuit distortion within the professional and consumer environment.
